Julius "Rock" Sneed is long remembered as one of the most outstanding offensive linemen in Governors' history. A North High School graduate, he matriculated to Austin Peay after serving in the Navy. Not big for an offensive linemen even in his day, Sneed played "watch-charm (pulling) guard" for the Govs and Dave Aaron from 1947-51. He was a major contributor to some of the Governors' greatest football successes. During his four seasons, Austin Peay recorded a 24-12-2 record, including consecutive 8-2 campaigns (1948-49). In 1949, Sneed was chosen All-VSAC (Volunteer State Athletic Conference).
In addition, he was named honorable mention Little All-American. He received his bachelor's degree in secondary and physical education (1951) and later earned his master's from George Peabody College.
Sneed returned to Nashville to begin a coaching career at North Hill High School. He left the coaching profession to enter the insurance business, serving 16 years as Atlanta office manager with Life Insurance Co., of North America (INA). Even while coaching and working in insurance, Sneed found time to officiate basketball. In fact, he became one of Adolph Rupp's favorite Southeastern Conference officials was respected highly at the national level.
After more than 20 years of officiating from coast to coast, he retired in 1977-78. Sneed died in a car accident, Dec 21, 1979, at the age of 53.
