Obituary - Lexington Herald-Leader (July 5, 1996)
John Will "Beef" Showalter, age 91 of Hiawatha Trail, Georgetown and the husband of Madalyn Cunningham. Showalter died Thursday, July 4, 1996 at his home. He was born in Scott County on August 16, 1904, and was the son of the late Jackson Whipps and Nellie Love Marshall Showalter. He operated the Showalter Brothers Farm, was a former member for 28 years of the Georgetown City Schools with the last 14 years as Chairman of he Board.
He was a former member of the Spring Lake County Club, and was also a Baseball Umpire for the American League, International League, Southern League and the Southeastern League. He also was a SEC official in Football, Baseball and Basketball. He was also a former member of the Georgetown Kiwanis. Club.
Survivors in addition to his wife include a daughter an son-in-law, Linda and Bruce Lankford, Georgetown, KY; a son and daughter-in-law, Edward Jackson and Martha Parker Showalter, Dallas TX; Grandchilden Amy Showalter, John William Showalter III, Ann Marie Showalter, Robert B. Lankford, Jr., John Showalter Lankford, Ford N. Lankford, II; a great grandson, Robert Bruce Lankford III. He was preceded in death by a brother, Freeman B. Showalter.
Services will be 2:30 p.m. Saturday, July 6, 1996, at the Tucker, Yocum & Wilson Funeral Home with Rev. Scott Cox officiating. Burial will be in the Georgetown Cemetery. Casketbearers will be his four grandsons, Gervis Showalter, Bill Hays, Ralph Elias and Stuart Beaheler. Honorary bearers will be Dr. Cedric Craig, Edward H. Lynch, F.W. McMillin, Macy Tackett, Ralph Carlisle, C.M. Newton, Gene Lucas, Lyman Ginger, Fred Keller, Donald Reese. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 at the funeral home on Friday.
