Obituary - Cincinnati Enquirer (August 24, 1959)
Moeller Is Victim of Heart Attack
Winton L. Moeller, principal of Woodward High School and widely-known sports official, died yesterday of a heart attack when swimming at Cruiser's Roost, across the Ohio River from the foot of Donham Street.
He was pulled from the water by his brother, Harry E. Moeller, and pronounced dead by a physician at the scene.
The doctor stated that a heart attack, and not drowning, was the cause of death. Hamilton County Coroner Herbert P. Lyle was asked to officially determine the cause.
Mr. Moeller was 55 years old and lived at 3502 Victoria Pl., Hyde Park. He and his brother and son-in-law, Carl Mayer, left the Cincinnati Yacht Club yesterday afternoon to boat and swim. The death occurred shortly before 6 p.m.
He became principal of the old Woodward High School in 1950 and continued as principal after the new high school was opened in 1953. He previously had been principal of Hartwell High School for five years.
Mr. Moeller graduated from Woodward in 1922 and served as assistant physical director from 1927 to 1941 and as director until 1946. Graduate of Wittenberg College, Springfield, he held a master's degree from the University of Cincinnati.
The Educator, who made all-state during his own football career, has served as referee for many years in high school, college and pro football leagues.
He also was active in supervising high school clubs in the city, and in 1951 conducted a report on 90 social clubs with nearly 3600 members for the Cincinnati School Board.
The survivors include his widow, Mabel; a daughter, Mrs. Janet Thomas, Cincinnati, and four brothers, Harry E., Walter and Arthur Moeller, all of Cincinnati, and Edward Moeller, Elgin, Ill.
Services will be arranged by the George H. Rohde and Son Funeral Home, 3183 Linwood Avenue, Mt. Lookout.
