Jeffries, Milward Tie for Scoring Honors; Each Gets 15 Points

NASHVILLE, Tenn., Feb. 8. -- The brilliant play of Capt. Paul Jenkins and Irvine Jeffries brought a crushing defeat to the Vandy Commodores here tonight by the lopsided score of 54 to 29. The Jeffries-Jenkins attack was curbed in the early stages by the Vandy defense, which was a stonewall. Later on it was sieved and the Wildcats came through for easy shots which brought about a veritable deluge.

Irvine Jeffries was worth 30 points to Kentucky tonight. He flipped 15 through the net and clipped at least the same number off the Commodore total. There have been brilliant performers in the Vandy gym in this campaign but none has surpassed the work of Irvine Jeffries. Paul Jenkins was equally as glittering in thwarting the Commodore pass attack.

Vandy this year is minus Moss, McCall and Stuart, but it is highly speculative as to what their success would have been against the Jeffries-Jenkins combination.

The Commodores got away to an early lead and after 12 minutes led, 7 to 4. But at the end of 15 minutes the count was tied at 11 all. From then on the Vandy five spent most of its time watching the Wildcats pitch goals. It was Jenkins who started the ball down the floor and he and Jeffries fed the ball to Combs and Milward who worked under the basket. Bridges led the Vandy defense but even with unusually good floor play, was unable to stop the Kentucky attack or to dim the luster of Jeffries.

Work of Jeffries and Jenkins Praised; Milward Gets 15 Points.

NASHVILLE, Tenn., Feb. 9 - Vanderbilt's Commodores enjoyed a lead over the Kentucky Wildcats in the first 12 minutes of their game here Wednesday night, but after that, they took a back seat and stayed there. The final score was 54 to 29 in favor of the blue-clad boys from the Bluegrass.

In a previous game at Lexington, the Wildcats took as little cognizance, of he fact that Vanderbilt is the 1927 southern champion as they did here tonight and walloped the Commodore machine, 43 to 23.

Vandy has been host to many clever basket ball players in its day, but these Kentuckians boast two or three performers that are in a class by themselves. Irvine Jeffries, forward, and Capt. Paul Jenkins, guard, burnt the floor with their hot pace. Impenetrable on the defense, tricky as a monkey throwing cocoanuts on the offense, these youngsters often left Vanderbilt's outfit standing around mouths agape.

Jeffries divided high scoring honors with Milward, center, who substituted for McBrayer, each getting 15 points. Combs got 11 points and Jenkins 6. Brooks led the scoring for Vandy, getting 10 markers.

Following the game the Cats left for Knoxville, where they play the University of Tennessee tonight.
