John Floyd, 74, VU Star, Dies
SHELBYVILLE - Services for John C. (Red) Floyd, 74, former Vanderbilt football player and assistant coach will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at his home, 416 Belmont Ave., Shelbyville.
He died Monday night in Bedford County Hospital after a heart attack.
The body is at the home.
Floyd, a native of Marshall County, was a halfback on the Vanderbilt University football team for four years, playing his first year there in 1915. He entered military service during World War I and, after the war, returned to Vanderbilt and played football in 1919-20. He was captain of the 1920 team.
Following his successful career as a player, he became head football coach in a Knoxville high school.
Floyd returned to Vanderbilt in 1927, serving for three years as assistant football coach under his former mentor, Dan McGuigin, and later went to Auburn University as head football coach.
He was also a former head football coach at The Citadel and Middle Tennessee State, and assistant coach at Rice University.
Floyd was a member of McKendree Methodist Church in Nashville.
He had lived in Shelbyville 30 years and was engaged in farming.
Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Margaret Huffman Floyd; a daughter, Mrs. Walter E. Griffing, San Antonio, Tex.; two sons, John C. Jr., Shelbyville, and Lt. Robert Huffman Floyd, U.S. Navy; five sisters, Miss Minnie Floyd, Mrs. J.R. Snell and Mrs. Henry Grady, Murfreesboro, Mrs. Jerry Bason, Tangerine, Fla., and Mrs. Carmen Campbell, Nashville, and four grandchildren.
