CATS SWAMP TENNESSEE, 43 TO 16
Combs, Milward lead Scorers; Vols Dazed By Kentucky Passing
KNOXVILLE, Tenn., Feb. 9. -- The University of Kentucky Wildcats completely outplayed the Tennessee Volunteers here tonight to score an easy 43-to-16 triumph in the second game of the season between the two teams. The first one ended with Kentucky on the long end of a 48-to-18 score.
Jeffries, Combs and Milward led the attack for the visitors, with the latter two doing most of the scoring. These boys were kept under the basket most of the time, one on one side and the other on the other, and their crip shots, fed to them by Jeffries, Jenkins and McGinnis, terrorized the Vols into submission.
The passing game employed by Kentucky completely dazed the Volunteers and put the Wildcats in a position to score most of their points on crip shots. Jeffries' floor work and the guarding of Jenkins were sensational features of the entire game.
Butcher played a bang-up floor game for Tennessee and Sharpe's shooting was above the average, considering he was being guarded by Jenkins. Sharpe, incidentally, scored every field goal, although he is generally regarded as the Vols' mainstay.
For the most part the Tennessee boys were forced to take shots from afar and the greatest majority of these were wild. Kentucky employed a man-to-man defense which kept the Vols at bay from start to finish.
Kentucky took an early lead and once had the Vols 10 to 1. The score at the end of the first half was 22 to 7, and although the Tennessee five staged somewhat of a rally as the final half began, Kentucky matched goal for goal in the first five minutes and easily pulled ahead for the victory.
The following play-by-play description is furnished. The Herald readers through the courtesy of Earl Hall Payne, manager of the Kentucky theatre.
