FORD CITY - Red Mihalik, a prominent basketball referee in the 1960s, died Wednesday of cancer. He was 80.
Mihalik died in Ford City, where he played high school basketball and began his career as a referee.
Mihalik was an official at six NCAA championships, mostly in the 1960s. He also was a referee at Olympic basketball games in 1964 in Tokyo and in '68 in Mexico City.
He was named to the Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass., in May 1986.
Mihalik, whose real first name was Zigmund, also played professional basketball in leagues that preceded the NBA. He is survived by his wife, Helen.
