Durham, N.C., Dec. 8. -- Sid Cohen, a Brooklyn cowboy, had his shooting irons hot as he came off the bench here Monday night to lead embattled Kentucky to a 78-64 conquest of Duke.
A Brooklyn high school product whom the Wildcats got via Kilgore Junior College in Texas, the 6-2 Cohen pumped home 19 vital points on nine field goals in a game that was closer than the final score indicates.
Cohen was rushed off the bench to replace Bennie Coffman at one guard after seven minutes of play with U.K. ahead 10-8 after having constructed a 6-0 margin. With Cohen sinking a shot from the corner and a 25-foot set set, and Johnny Cox and Dick Parsons getting field goals, U.K. went ahead 18-11 after 10 minutes of combat.
Lead at Halftime
The Cats led 36-28 at the halftime.
Duke came out flaming and dead-eye to open the second half, however.
Bedeviling the Cats, the Blue Devils spurted to within 36-32 of U.K. The teams then slugged it out the next eight minutes, and Duke twice pulled within a point at 43-42 and 45-44.
The Blue Devils still were close with 11 minutes left in the game at 51-48. Here, though, Cox pushed home a 20-foot field goal and Cohen scored with two quick jump shots from 20 feet out to make it 57-48 U.K.
From that point on, Duke never threatened seriously. But the Blue Devils never collapsed until the final minute when, behind by just nine at 73-64, they began to foul in desperation. And U.K. hit the free throws.
Senior Phil Johnson also came off the bench to perform nobly in a reserve role for the Cats as they achieved their third victory in as many outings and inflicted the second loss in as many starts on Duke.
Johnson came in for center Don Mills, who picked up three fouls early in the first half and his fourth early in the second half. Johnson came through with 12 points, nine in the clutch during the second half, as five Wildcats wound up in double figures.
Besides Cohen and Johnson, these were Parsons with 14, Cox - who again rebounded magnificently against the bigger Blue Devils - with 13, and Mills with 13, although Mills played less than a half. However, he scored Kentucky's first seven points to open the second half as Duke stormed back.
U.K. hit from outside well, and it was fortunate the Cats did. For Duke slipped into zone defenses at times and played a deliberate weave attack on offense much of the way, although running in the second half.
Carroll Youngkins with 17 points, 10 the second half, and Howard Hurt with 15 led the Blue Devils. Like U.K., Duke has a young team, starting three or four sophomores and a senior or junior.
