Obituary - Obituary for Benjamin C. "Bennie" Coffman, Huntington (WV) Herald-Dispatch (February 24, 2024)
Bennie Coffman, of Huntington, West Virginia passed away on Wednesday, February 21, 2024 at the age of 86 years old.Bennie was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, teacher, coach, and business owner.
Bennie was an All American and Hall of Fame college basketball player at Lindsey Wilson University. He was the first junior college player signed by Adolph Rupp to play for the University of Kentucky (sic), where he was a leading player. In one of his best games, he scored 20 points against Jerry West and West Virginia.
He went on to an All-American career in AAU basketball with the Goodyear Wingfoots before going on to a successful career coaching in high school and college. He had one of the most successful runs in Kentucky high school history with his Boone County Lady Rebels, where he was number one in the state multiple years.
He passed from natural causes in his hometown of Huntington, West Virginia. Bennie is survived by his wife of 63 years Melanie, his son Ben Jr. and daughter-in-law Kate. He also has five grandsons, Ben III, Caden, Liam Canyon Rock and Mavrik Stone Coffman. He also recently had his first great grandson, Kai Coffman, nephew, Greg Carico and niece Amber Carico.
He will always be remembered as a man that would help anybody with anything like pulling off the side of the road and helping someone with car trouble. He gave his life to the Lord in 2023 and is now with God in Heaven. Rest in peace and God save his soul. Chapman's Mortuary Huntington is assisting the family.
