Services Set for Sports, Civic Official
The funeral for Jefferson County Commissioner Joe Caldwell will be a 8 tonight at Rose Broadway Chapel.
Mr. Caldwell died Friday at St. Mary's Regional Medical Center after a long illness. He was 68.
In addition to representing District 6 on the Jefferson County Commission, Mr. Caldwell was widely known as an area college and local high school football and basketball official.
A retired postmaster of Strawberry Plains, he worked for the U.S. Postal Service for 42 years.
In 1989, he received the Distinguished Service Award from the National Football Foundation Hall of Fame.
He was inducted into the Knoxville Sports Hall of Fame in 1990 and was a member of the Tennessee Football Hall of Fame and the Knox Sports Hall of Fame.
The family will receive friends 5:30-8 p.m. Sunday at Rose Mortuary Broadway Chapel. The Rev. Tom Ballard will officiate at the funeral.
Family and friends will meet at Eastview Cemetery at 10:45 a.m. Monday for an 11 a.m. interment service.
Memorials may be made to Strawberry Plains United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Grace Maxey Caldwell; his children, Joe Maxey Caldwell and special friend Pat Roberts of Knoxville, and Ted and Lisa Caldwell of Chattanooga; sisters and brothers-in-law Jewell and Robert Eubanks of Knoxville and Gail and Ronnie Jackson of Nashville; brother and sister-in-law Leon and Etta Caldwell of Rome, Ga.; and five grandchildren.
