Obituary - Murfreesboro (TN) Daily News-Journal (February 3, 1984)
Illness Claims Sports Official Jackson, 75
Herman Jackson, who died Thursday, will be remembered as a man of tremendous energy who gave much of himself to college athletics while helping Murfreesboro grow.
Mr. Jackson, known for years as one of the most dedicated officials who refereed college basketball games, died at age 75, after an extended illness.
He is survived by his wife, Sarah McCord Jackson of Murfreesboro, and one sister, Thelma Benzing, of Hermitage.
Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Jennings and Ayers Chapel. Burial will follow in Evergreen Cemetery.
Retired MTSU basketball coach Charles "Bubber" Murphy remembered Mr. Jackson as "a tremendous official. I've seen him call 12 games in one day by himself."
Murphy recalled that he first met Mr. Jackson in 1934, when the coach was still a freshman at State Teachers College, later to be named MTSU. Mr. Jackson had already graduated and was a local businessman and referee.
"He called just about every game I ever played in here. He meant a lot to the school," the coach said.
Mr. Jackson refereed games for the colleges and universities that would later form the Ohio Valley Conference, Murphy said, and also refereed games in the Southeastern Conference.
"I was very fond of him," said local businessman Will Drew.
He recalled that his father worked for Mr. Jackson during World War II, when the referee-businessman managed part of Sewart Air Force Base.
Mr. Jackson later developed Jackson Heights Shopping Center here and motels here and in several states.
Active pallbearers will be Dan Jordon, Dr. Jack Bailey, John D. Wiseman, Tom Jones and Boyd Jones.
