Gamecocks Lay an Egg as Cats Win 21st:
Kentucky won its 21st SEC Basketball Tournament in surprisingly easy style, 86-56 over South Carolina at the Georgia Dome. Kentucky was ranked #7, and South Carolina was #15 in the AP Poll for this contest. It was the 1st meeting between the schools in SEC Tournament history, and the 6th Tournament title for the Cats in the last 7 years. UK was without the services of starting guard Jeff Sheppard, who had twisted an ankle in the Arkansas contest. In addition, starting center Nazr Mohammed had a slight separation of his right shoulder.
Wayne Turner scored 12 pts in the 1st half as UK took leads of 8-2, 16-6, and began the 2nd half with an 18-7 spurt to give them a cozy 70-49 edge with 6 minutes remaining.
Kentucky scored the last 15 consecutive pts of the game to provide the final margin. Reserve Steve Masiello scored a late 3 pointer, and hit another long shot which looked for all the world like a 3, but was ruled a 2.
With the victory, Kentucky is 6-0 in SEC Tournament games played in the Georgia Dome, and is undefeated in that facility. The win was the 21st SEC Tournament title for the Cats in 39 events (UK's Tournament title in 1988 was vacated).
Kentucky's 13 3 pt shots was a season high for them for a single game. Padgett's 3 3 pt shots equaled his season high.
