Cats Roll Up 81-22 Victory Over Mexicans

Rupp Pulls DeMoisey, Sale After Powerhouse Steams Ahead to Fifty-Point Lead

While University of Kentucky basketball fans strengthened international friendship and good will with Mexico by their unprejudiced cheering and the U.. band made the visitors feel at home by playing the national anthem of the bordering country and other Mexican airs, Coach Adolph Rupp's basketball slaughtered the Fal Club of the University of Mexico, 81 to 22 last night at the Euclid Avenue gym.

Coach Rupp figured that so far as the actual playing of the game was concerned, Mexico was as much of an enemy as the Vanderbilt Commodores or the Alabama Red Elephant, so he sent his powerhouse into the tilt loaded for bear and with no intentions of entering into a peace pact. In the first ten minutes, the Wildcats made 28 points while the Mexicans - little bit-ty fellows - tried gamely, helpless and somewhat pathetically to halt the slaughter.

The Mexicans they will tell you, have not been playing basketball long, but they need not go to the trouble. Their game itself tells you so. They had only a smattering of what to do on defense and then didn't do it; while on offense, the only thing that concerned them was getting the ball through the basket and they didn't know how to do that very well. But they tried and their gameness struck a fatherly (or motherly) response in the bosoms of the Wildcat fans and whenever they made a goal or intercepted a pass, the crowd - a very good one - cheered lustily. The Big Blue supporters even went so far as to give Referee Dan Tehan one loud, hearty bee when he called a questionable foul on one of the black-headed, olive-skinned youngsters.

John "Frenchy" DeMoisey, the free-wheeler who goes so well when the competition is not so tough, had a big night last night and so did reliable Aggie Sale. DeMoisey and Sale, each standing about a foot taller than the tallest Mexican, one curly-headed John Gilbert type named Hernandez, made 23 and 22 points respectively. They probably would have made more but Coach Rupp took them out after the Cats had about a 50-point lead.

Coach Rupp used 14 players during the game and Dave Lawrence and Tucker carried off the scoring honors for the subs with ten and six points respectively. The Mexicans, using only one substitute themselves, evidently were unaccustomed to substitutions for they forgot Dave Lawrence almost entirely and he shot five field goals from a position directly under the basket with the closest energy at least ten feet away.

The Mexicans are notoriously rotten shots and their marksmanship with a basketball isn't any better than it is with a rifle. They made nine field goals, it is true, but each one of them gave the fans the feeling it was more luck than good aim.

The Mexicans have had a trying time traveling all over this section of the country in a bus, playing a game nearly every night, but they impressed the crowd with their quickness, agility and speed. As a matter of fact, the game was extremely fast, despite the lop-sidedness of the score and the Mexicans twice and the Wildcats once had to call time out so as to catch their breaths.

The Mexicans did one thing extremely well - they handled the ball on short, quick bounce passes in a way that had the Wildcats guessing. Once when Hernandez bounced the ball cleanly between Dutch Kreuter's legs, the Dutchman started talking to himself.

The Wildcats' next game will be played Saturday night at the U.K. gymnasium against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets.
