Obituary - Ex-Dean David Lawrence Dies Louisville Courier-Journal (January 11, 2000)
David Lawrence, the first dean of students at the University of Louisville, died yesterday at his home. He was 87.
Lawrence, a native of Erlanger, graduated with a bachelor of arts in physical education and social science in 1935 from the University of Kentucky and earned a master's degree in educational administration from UK in 1939.
While at UK, he played basketball for Adolph Rupp.
He came to U of L in 1946 as a physical education instructor and shortly after became the Cardinals' track coach, leading them to state championships in 1947 and 1948.
He was named dean of men at U of L in 1952 and held that position until 1963, when he was appointed the first dean of students. The post was created to coordinate student services due to an increase among the college's out-of-town students.
Lawrence took a five-month sabbatical in 1970 and traveled to 24 universities, ranging from the University of Miami to the University of Hawaii, to learn about the influences students have on administrative decisions, all the while living with students in their dormitories.
Lawrence was a past president of the Downtown Lions Club and a World War II Navy veteran.
He is survived by his wife, the former Doris Shrader; a daughter, Judy Miller; sons William and Gary Lawrence, a sister, Ruby Meeks; brothers Duard and Blaine Lawrence; eight grandchildren; and two great-grand-children.
His funeral will be at 11 a.m. tomorrow at St. Matthews United Methodist Church, 319 Browns Lane, with burial in the International Order of Odd Fellows Cemetery in Sulphur. Visitation will be at Pearson's Funeral Home, 149 Breckenridge Lane, from 4 to 7 p.m. today.
Memorial contributions can be sent to his church or the Kentucky Lions Eye Foundation.
