Kentucky Cagers Fall Before Varsity Five
F. Tompkins Joins Squad
Carolina Downs Kentucky, Southeastern Conference Pace-Setters
Dana Henderson Stars
Four Thousand Cheer Birds On To Hard Earned Victory
Led by Freddy Tompkins playing in his first varsity game the Carolina cage team met and beat a highly rated Kentucky team by the score of 44 to 38. Tompkins was all of the fireworks for Carolina in the first half the Kentucky men having a difficult time covering his portside shots.
Davis, Wildcat guard, and incidentally the smallest man on the floor scored repeatedly with long shots from the floor in the first half but was kept bottled up in the final period by Grayson Wolf. The Kentucky team also put, All-American guard on Freddy Tompkins in the second half. (sic)
Dana Henderson led the scores by ringing up 19 points and was followed by Freddy Tompkins who garnered 17 points. B. Tompkins got eight points to complete the scoring for Carolina. Sale and Davis led the Kentuckians, each of them ringing fifteen points. Sale was voted All-American center last year but could not keep Henderson from being high scorer. Henderson's total for the season through the Kentucky game is 190. Bennie Thompkins is second with 98. Vincent, V.P.I. forward is leading the Southern Conference in scoring with a total of 98 points. Henderson has only scored 13 points against Clemson but will have a chance to boost his total when the Birds meet N.C. State tonight. Wolf and B. Thompkins also have 13 points in conference games.
Kentucky is rated as one of the best basketball teams in the country. At present they are leading the Southeastern Conference. Their defeat here was the only one which they have suffered in the South. Ohio State, leader in the Big Ten and Creighton University one of the best teams in the Missouri Valley are the only other teams which have beaten the Wildcats this year. Kentucky beat Creighton in a second game played.
SPORTSMANSHIP - The Gamecock (February 10, 1933)
The attitude of the student body at the Kentucky game has caused much adverse comment from the local scribes. We prefer to think that this is caused by ignorance of a code of sportsman's ethics rather than mere impoliteness. At any rate the booing at the game was extremely unpleasant to those who restrained themselves and also made it difficult for the referee, Blackie Carter. It is hard enough for a referee to keep the game in hand without having to keep the spectators in control.
The following is a Code of Sportsmanship for Spectators:
Let us hope that we will see at least some of these rules observed in the future, especially rules five and seven which have been the most flagrantly violated.
