Obituary - Educator George Yates Dies in DeLand at 78, St. Augustine (FL) Record (June 6, 1988)
George Yates, 78, retired principal of St. Augustine High School and a former member of the St. Johns County School Board, died Saturday at Ridgecrest Manor DeLand. He was born in Elizabethtown, Ky., and he had resided here since 1952.
He was a graduate of the University of Kentucky, where he starred in basketball, track and football. He played on the first Kentucky team coached by Adolph Rupp, for whom the university's basketball arena was named, and he was named All Southern in 1931 Southern Conference Tournament. He was an honorary Kentucky colonel.
Before coming to St. Augustine, he was coach, teacher and superintendent of schools at Versailles, Ky. in St. Johns County, he was first a teacher at Ketterlinus and then principal at St. Augustine High School, and later was elected to the School Board.
He was a member of Ancient City Baptist Church and served as an usher.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Ancient City Baptist Church, with the Rev. T.J. Powers officiating. Burial will be in St. Augustine Memorial Park. Friends may call at Croyle Funeral Home from 7 to 8 p.m. today.

Survivors include his wife, Doris Yates, St. Augustine; a daughter, Gaye Eatman, Palm Beach Gardens; two stepdaughters, Joan Osteen, St. Augustine and Bonnie Enos, Edwardsville, Ill.; and a brother L.C. Yates, Elizabethtown, Ky.
