KNOXVILLE, Tenn., Dec. 19 (UPI)ÑEmmett Lowery, head basketball coach at Tennessee from 1947 to 1959, died yesterday at Franklin, N. C., where he had moved last summer, after living in Clearwater, Fla., for 16 years. He was 633 years old.
Mr. Lowery was a native of Indianapolis and was named the top basketball player in his home state during his senior year in high school. He played basketball at Purdue, where he also was an end on the football team and played with the school's tennis squad.
He coached at Minnesota State and Wisconsin State, then served as a naval officer during World War II. Mr. Lowery was an assistant coach at Purdue in basketball and football and was hired by Bob Neyland to succeed John Mauer as Tennessee's basketball coach in 1947.
His record at Tennessee was 169 victories against 110.
