Forgettable Night
When Kentucky knocked off Auburn less than a week ago Billy Gillispie pointed out that no matter how poorly the Cats played it was still good for one win and one win only.
Good thing losses count the same as victories.
The Cats (12-10, 6-3 SEC) turned in their worst performance in years, getting embarrassed 93-52 by an energized Vanderbilt team in Memorial Gym. The Commodores used a 34-5 first half run to take a 41-11 lead at intermission and then extended the lead to as much as 43 in cruising past the team that ended their perfect season on Jan. 12.
Vanderbilt made one fewer field goal than UK had shot attempts in the first half, frustrating the Cats so much they could rarely get a clean look at the basket. Until Joe Crawford ended a 12:22 drought with a spinning leaner in the lane with 2:21 remaining the seldom used A.J. Stewart ranked as the Cats' leading scorer with three points, revealing all UK fans needed to know about the course of the first 20 minutes.
The 11 points scored in the first half was the lowest total in a half during the shot clock era for UK and 14 below their smallest output this season. Patrick Patterson and Ramel Bradley, who average a combined 33 points a game, managed just four during the deluge from the Commodores.
The second half was no better as Vanderbilt dropped a 14-3 spurt on the Cats to begin at the outset and ended any thoughts - however slight - of a historic comeback. The defeat also crushed the Cats in the court of public opinion as it pertains to a potential NCAA Tournament at-large bid.
Shan Foster led all scorers with 20 points, while A.J. Ogilvy added 19 and Kentucky native Ross Neltner 15 for the Commodores. UK was led by Ramel Bradley's 21 points, 18 of which came after the half.
