Wave Beaten By Wildcats. Score, 38 to 9
Brilliant Kentucky Cagers Hold Greenies in Check Throughout
Kentucky's basketball marvels turned back a fighting Tulane team, 38 to 9, Friday night to open the current season in the Greenie gymnasium before a crowd of 800 fans. The second game of the series will be played at 8:15 o'clock tonight.
The invading Wildcats presented a strong defense which limited the Wavemen to three field goals, and in the meantime maneuvered Garland Lewis and LeRoy Edwards into position to locate the hoop with great regularity. Twelve minutes of the game had elapsed before Kendall Cram put Tulane's first field goal through the basket.
Big LeRoy Edwards, Kentucky's star sophomore center, led the scoring of the evening with a total of 10 points, coming through with three goals from the field and a quartet of foul shots. The giant Kentuckian, who stands 6 feet 4 inches in his stocking feet, gave the Tulane guards trouble aplenty, and he had a number of free throws that failed to go through the hoop.
Garland Lewis, a Kentucky forward, came second in individual scoring with four field goals for a total of eight points.
Kendall Cram, Tulane's diminutive forward, headed the Greenie scoring list with two field goals for four points.
As a whole, the Wave quintet, composed of three new faces at the outset, did very well, scrapping the brilliant Wildcats all the way through. "Boisey" McCloskey, Ernie Carrere and Bobby Monsted, the Tulane newcomers, played a fine brand of basketball. Monsted did a good job of guarding the giant Edwards until his overzealousness sent him from the game with four personal fouls.
Kentucky got off to an early start, with Jack Tucker looping a goal from the field in the first minute of play.
Unable to do much with the scrapping Greenies under the basket, Kentucky opened its long-range attack, and at the half the sharpshooters from the Blue Grass rested with an 18-to-5 advantage.
Taking up the attack at the opening of the second period, he smooth-working Rupp machine gradually increased its lead despite a constant flow of substitutions, and held Tulane's offensive to a pair of field goals during this time.
Prices for the game tonight will be 40 cents for adults and 25 cents for children.
