Obituary - Charles 'Gar' Lewis, 1912-2009,
Lewis was born when Taft was President, lived through the Great Depression and grew up on a farm when he picked up a bushel basket for a basketball hoop. He later attended the University of Kentucky on a basketball scholarship and played on a Wildcat team coached by the legendary Adolph Rupp.
Lewis was born April 27, 1912 in Brownstown, Indiana to Charles and Edna Lewis. He married Bobbie Holland Lewis in 1935 and enjoyed for 58 years the "love of his life." She died in 1993. Lewis is survived by two sons: Charles Garland Lewis, Jr. aka 'Gary' and Steven Randolph Lewis and wife Patty. Three grandchildren: Steven Lewis, Jr., Shane Foley and Evan Lewis Stone, and husband Kevin.
Lewis served at San Marino High School as a coach and athletic director from 1952-1973. He was back on campus on July 16, 2008 when the San Marino Unified School District named the high school's basketball court in his honor. He called this "one of the highlights of my life" as many former players attended the dedication.
At that ceremony, former Mayor Bob Twist revealed that on the first day of football practice in 1952, Lewis said "well, I have to go buy some uniforms. How about blue and white?" Hearing no dissent, Lewis then outfitted the newly named Titans in Kentucky's trademark royal blue and white.
Private services were held on December 15th at Rose Hills Memorial Park with members of the immediate family in attendance.
