Wildcats Lead Throughout

Ruppmen Colorless In First Contest

Kentucky's Wildcats won an unimpressive 35 to 21 victory from the Miami University quintet of Oxford, Ohio, last night in Alumni gymnasium as they opened their 1941-42 basketball season before a crowd of about 3,000 spectators.

Jumping into the lead soon after the opening tipoff with a field goal by Waller White, the Kentuckians were never in danger although they failed to show the offensive strength expected as Coach Rip Van Winkle's Redskins kept a close watch on the Wildcat shooting stars.

Defensively the Blue and White looked up to par for an opening tilt as they held Miami to eight field goals.

For the first five minutes of the encounter it looked as though it would be a runaway for Coach Adolph Rupp's quintet as Ticco followed White's opener with a basket, Ken England dropped through two in succession and White tallied again from the foul line to put the Kentuckians ahead, 10 to 0.

Miami Scores on Foul

Miami's first score came when Wayne Clapp dropped through a free throw after he had been fouled by Capt. Carl Staker. A few minutes later he tallied another point after being fouled by White, and Bill Alderman then slipped through the Wildcat defense to sink a crip shot for the Redskins' first field goal.

A foul shot and a long one from the side by White lifted the Wildcats' total to 13, then Captain Staker cropped through a free throw and Mel Brewer sank two successive crips to end the first-half scoring for Kentucky.

Jimmie Uram added to the visitors' total with a looping shot from the side, and then came back to sink a crip from under the basket. Bob McDade finished the scoring for the first half with a short shot from the side.

After the rest period, Miami drew first blood when Ralph Palaia tossed in a long one from near the sideline. McDade dropped through a free throw after being fouled by Staker and tipped one in to bring the Redskin total to 15 before the Wildcats could get started.

White Heads Scorers

However, White who took high-scoring honors for the night with 10 points, again started the fireworks for Kentucky by tossing one in from the side and, after being fouled on the play by Jones, dropped in a free throw to add another point.

Brewer tallied from the foul circle and sank a free one after being fouled by Clapp to put the Cats ahead 24 to 15 at the end of the first five minutes of play in the second half.

Miami was held to two field goals and two foul shots during the remaining 15 minutes of the game. McDade scored from under the basket. Palaia sank a free throw after Staker had committed his fourth personal foul and had been banished from the game. Alderman got a crip, and McDade made good a free one after being fouled by Ed Lander.

Ticco Scores Beauty

Ticco, who came back into the game to replace Ermal Allen, dropped through a beauty from the corner to raise the Kentuckians' total and Marvin Akers, substitute for Staker, got one of his specialty shots from the center of the floor.

England drove through to tally on a crip. Ticco made good on a free throw. Akers got another long one from the side, and Back and Splane dropped through free throws to end the scoring for the Wildcats.

In a preliminary game, Coach Paul McBrayer's Kittens trounced a U.S. Army quintet from Fort Knox, 57 to 38 with a youngster by the name of Davis stealing the show, by accounting for 29 points for the freshmen. The yearlings led at half-time 23 to 17.
