Kentucky won its first game against Arkansas since the 1978 Final Four on Saturday as the Cats slid past the Hogs 92-81.
The Cat start was even better than against Tennessee - UK raced out to a 17-0 lead before Arkansas knew what hit them. Thurman hit a 2 point shot, then UK went out 21-2 at 5.5 minutes into the game. The Wildcat's first missed shot came at the 5 minute mark, but UK then went out to a 24-4 lead, and would lead by as much as 21 in the first half.
Arkansas mounted a charge, assisted by some bad Kentucky passing (which were too forced), and they closed to 27-13. Once again, Gimel Martinez contributed to these with poor passing and some traveling calls. Due to increased harassment of Ford, Mashburn started bring the ball up the court. Rodrick Rhodes shot poorly, but he played excellent defense and hustled to somewhat compensate. With 5.5 minutes left in the half, UK's lead was but to 11, then 10, then 8. Arkansas cut the lead to as little as 4 on a couple of occasions, but UK edged back out 42-36 at the half.
Rhodes played a little better in the second half, and helped build the lead back to 9 points with a long 2 point shot, a nice steal and subsequent dunk. Rodney Dent twisted an ankle while going for a rebound, and he immediately left the game. The trainer said it wasn't serious, but that he would probably not play the next day.
Arkansas didn't panic, and they again managed to cut the lead to 4 points at 55-51 with 7 minutes left in the game. When Ford picked up his 4th foul (on a truly unnecessary attempt to stop a breakaway basket), things looked dark, but UK never gave up. Despite more turnovers, an airball free throw by Rhodes, and other similar plays, UK built a lead which ranged from 4-6 points throughout the next several minutes. Martinez finally had a great putback basket which gave UK an 8 point lead, and the Piggies called a timeout. They then produced a 5-0 run, but thereafter they appeared to run out of gas, and UK cruised on the basis of Mashburn free throws and Ford 3 pointers, to its first SEC victory over the Hogs.
Travis Ford had a sensational game, hitting 6-7 3 pointers and hitting all of his free throws to lead Kentucky in scoring.
