Orange Goo:
... was all that was left of the Tennessee Volunteers after UK was finished with them Friday night. In defeating the Orange by 101-40, Kentucky set or tied 13 SEC tournament records, including:
a) most points scored (101, tied with the UK-Alabama game of 1979 which was 101-100 in favor of the Cats)
b) most 3 point shots made (12)
c) most assists (30)
d) most steals (19)
e) opponent's most turnovers (30)
f) opponent's lowest FG %age (23.1%)
[JNB note - sorry, but since the UK game was so late, the Atlanta papers didn't include game stats, and my Lexington papers won't arrive until after I've gone to the Midwest Regionals. I'll try to include the UT game stats in a future newsletter.] The 61 point margin of victory eclipsed the previous margin of 43 points in the series, but it did not set an SEC tournament margin record! That honor belongs to the Cats, in a 98-29 pasting delivered to Vanderbilt back in the 1947 tournament.
UK started off with a whirlwind 14-0 lead, on a twisting Dent layup, a Prickett drive which resulted in an old-fashioned 3 point play, and other fine shots. UK didn't miss *any* shots early either - Pitino had his charges fired up out of their minds. The Vols appeared rattled by their poor start and the Kentucky pressure, and had several unforced errors. Finally, after 5 minutes of play, Jermaine Brown scored for UT.
A Brassow 3 pointer created a 20-6 score with 11.5 minutes left in the first half. Halfway through the period, the score was 25-8 and a couple of minutes later the lead grew to 29-10. Martinez was just about the only player who looked bad - missing his shots (and taking some questionable ones, a rare occurrence for this team), and not connecting on passes. Allan Houston was absolutely shut down - the future NBA star scored only 3 points, and those were on a 3 point shot taken late in the game. Martinez shut down 7 footer Steve Hamer who had been playing well in his last couple of games.
Jared Prickett continued his phenomenal playing streak, getting some solid rebounds, many put-backs, and fast breaking very well for such a big guy. UK held a 41-17 halftime lead.
It was more of the same in the second half. UK blew out to a 50-17 lead in the first 2.5 minutes of the second half. Martinez was called for a unique foul - he put his nose into a Vol player's elbow! Similarly, Prickett was called for a foul when Houston clearly backed into him - perhaps the refs wanted to make sure the debacle wasn't going to be *too* bad! :-) But Kentucky kept pouring it on - all the players ended up doing rather well. At one point in the second half, UT had almost as many turnovers (27) as it had points (28).
Crowd favorite Todd Svoboda entered the game with 8 minutes remaining. He was credited with a shot on a goaltend, and had some nice tips which turned into rebounded shots, as well as a pretty assist. He finished with 4 points and 5 rebounds.
Houston's final basket of his college career came with 4.5 minutes remaining. Kentucky (and SEC) fans in the stands gave him a standing ovation when he was taken out immediately afterwards, as a token of respect for his sensational play over the last 4 years. A pity that such a great player has never played in the NCAA tournament!
Prickett was named Player of the Game, for scoring 11 points, grabbing 8 rebounds, making 7 steals, and dishing out 5 assists. Jamal Mashburn had 11 points, 9 rebounds, and Rodrick Rhodes had 5 points and 4 assists. Seven Wildcat players scored in double figures, and at least 12 players scored [JNB note - don't know about Timberlake, who played but didn't look very good]. Tony Delk led the Cats with 15 points. Mashburn played his fewest number of minutes in a game all season - he wasn't needed!
