The Irish Don't Fight Hard Enough:
[JNB note - to my everlasting furor, Atlanta's NBC affiliate decided not to show this game. Since it was played in the afternoon, there was no way I could pick up the radio signal either, so all the information I am presenting is just a synopsis of what I've read. Sorry.]
Kentucky shot out to a big lead in the first 10 minutes of the game, and then coasted the rest of the way. Notre Dame's Monty Williams scored 26 points in the game's first 24 minutes, but got just 2 foul shots in the second half. UK's shooting in the second half was deadly, and their FT shooting was much improved - over 75% for one of the few times this year! ND mounted a charge to start the second half, closing to within 3, but Mashburn led a UK surge which regained the momentum.
Side notes - Jared Prickett was torn between Kentucky and Notre Dame during his recruiting. After he visited South Bend he was sure he wanted to play there, but his subsequent visit to Lexington convinced him to go to UK. Prickett made his first collegiate start in this game.
Another interesting aspect of this game was that Sam Lickliter of Indiana-Penn State fame, was the head official for this contest. He received plenty of boos and heckling during the game, as you can imagine. Pitino afterwards complained that the officiating didn't seem uniform - at times, two officials made opposite calls (such as the block/ charge or out-of-bounds possession) which had to be reconciled.
The Notre Dame game marked the first road trip for Ryan Pitino, age 2. ND dropped to 9-12, and had the dubious distinction of having played each of last week's AP top 4 teams at some point of their season. ND's schedule was listed by Sagarain as the 4th toughest in the country (after Indiana, Michigan, and Temple).
