Piggies in the Barn(hill):
Kentucky's 6 game winning streak came to an end last Wednesday in Fayetteville, Arkansas, as the Razorbacks beat UK 101-94.
The Wildcats stayed close the whole way, and even had a couple of brief leads, but for most of the evening they were playing catch-up basketball. Both teams had several spurts during the contest, but Arkansas basically maintained control although UK closed to within 4 points on 5 occasions inside the last 2.5 minutes.
Razorback freshman Corliss Williamson came off the bench to have a sensational game with 22 points and 8 rebounds. No one really appeared able to stop him near the basket (except Rodney Dent, who didn't play much in the second half. Perhaps earlier rumors about illness on the Kentucky team were true, since Tony Delk played only a limited amount of time, despite scoring well when he was in, and Jeff Brassow did not play either. This latter may however simply be a desire to allow his knee to fully recuperate).
The Arkansas team pressed and trapped against Kentucky, and UK didn't handle it well early, although as the game progressed they had less trouble with it. But UK fell behind in the opening minutes and had to work hard to pull to within 3 points at the half. The Razorbacks started the second half well, and eventually built a lead of as many as 15 points before UK whittled it down to 4. Kentucky had problems hitting its 3s at the end of the game (Arkansas went out of its way to prevent this).
Junior Braddy and Rodrick Rhodes did appear up to their usual forms, with Braddy having numerous turnovers and bad passes. Again, it may be that rumors of sickness among the Wildcats this week were correct, which could explain their poor play. Travis Ford got to experience a little bit of what Mashburn goes through all the time - Travis was frequently double or triple teamed, especially near mid- court, and he turned the ball over rather more often than is typical for him (although some of this was the fault of his teammates for not helping him out when he got in trouble).
Although there were no major embarrassments (of the Indiana- Penn State caliber!) of officiating in this game, Arkansas received some benefit in two questionable calls. In one play, a Razorback player dived out of bounds in an effort to toss the ball back to a teammate. He succeeded, but he was clearly seen to come down out of bounds before he released the ball (yet no call was made). In another instance, a Razorback guard slipped on the court, and slip for a couple of feet. As he was sliding, he tossed the ball to a teammate (Stewart) who went in for the dunk. No traveling call was made while the passing player was sliding, however.
Nolan Richardson is now 2-0 against Kentucky, and is the only SEC coach that Pitino has yet to beat. Kentucky falls to 17-2, 8-2 in the conference, while Arkansas raises its record to 16-4, and 7-3 in the SEC.
