Revenge Is A Dish Which Is Best Served Cold:
It wasn't easy, but UK managed to beat Vanderbilt after trailing early in the game. The final score was 82-67, the same margin by which the Commodores beat the Wildcats in Nashville. Early in the game, UK couldn't seem to stop Brian McCaffrey from outside or Alan Lawson inside, but patience on both offense and defense allowed the Cats to come from behind and take a 10 point lead at halftime, after trailing by as much as 7 points early on (when UK trailed 13-6).
In the second half UK's pressure seemed to bother Vandy more, although they still managed to cut the lead to 6 during one run with about 12 minutes remaining in the game. Good 3 point shooting by Travis Ford and Junior Braddy enabled Kentucky to remain on top (UK hit on 14 for 30 three-point shots). Offensive rebounding continued to be good for the Cats, who scored 30 points on putbacks.
Vanderbilt appeared to grow tired as the game wore on, and their efficiency slipped in several areas of play. The Commodores had been the league's best shooting team (51.4%), but UK held them to a season low 32.8% in this game. In Kentucky's earlier loss, Vandy had hit on 63.6% of their shots. The Wildcat defense was sufficiently good that in the last 9:32 of the first half, Vandy made only a single field goal.
In his weekly television show, Coach Pitino said that Kentucky's offense has a lot of room for improvement, but he thought that for the last several games, UK has been playing defensively about as well as it is able, for the level of talent that the team currently has. He said that Vandy, like many other teams during the season, frequently triple- teamed Mashburn inside, which left the outside perimeter open for the 3 point shot. Pitino stated that it was his opinion that any moderately good basketball shooter can hit the three point shot from the current position, and that the three point line should be moved back to the international distance.
Vanderbilt has never won in Rupp Arena (they are 0-17 there against Kentucky, and 0-2 in SEC tournament games as well). UK raised its record to 17-1 with this win (8-1 in the SEC), Vandy fell to 17-4 (7-2 in the conference). With this defeat of Vanderbilt, Kentucky now owns the longest winning streak in the conference (a mere 6 games) [JNB note - this was prior to the Arkansas loss.]
