Obituary - Toledo Blade (April 6, 2021)
Michael (Mike) W. Wilde, age 80, passed away Saturday, April 3, 2021 at The Glendale Assisted Living Community from complications of dementia. He was born January 21, 1941, to Arthur J. Wilde and Helen M. (Sherry) Wilde in Toledo. He attended Rosary Cathedral Catholic grade school and was a member of the first graduating class of St. Francis de Sales High School in 1958. During his time at St. Francis, Mike was a celebrated basketball player. He attended the University of Toledo in the 1960's and obtained an associate's degree. He was one of the starting pitchers in the Rocket rotation in the early 1960's.
Over the course of his career, he was a strong proponent of organized labor. He spent 3 decades as a longshoreman at The Toledo Lakefront Docks, where he served as president of the longshoremen's association.
After retiring from "The Docks", he became a field representative for MEBA and OAPSE. His passions were his family, his friends (P.O.T.S. Club) and his love for officiating high school and collegiate basketball. In fact, Mike could even document that he once gave Bobby Knight a technical. He was inducted into the Northwest Ohio District Basketball Officials Association in 2003. Always a comedian, his sense of humor was unparalleled. As a true Irishman, many strangers knew his gift of the gab. He made friends wherever he went.
He is survived by his wife, Phyllis Wilde; brother, Tim (Jane); sons, Ryan (Kerri) Wilde and Darren (Kelly) Wilde; grandchildren, Hunter, Chasten, Oliver and Violet Wilde; stepchildren, Tim (Deb) Doughtery, Jill (Jake) Swanson, Joell (Joe) Garcia, Jamie (Scott) Fischer, Billy Todorowski, Andy (Alyssa) Todorowski, Tari (Jon) Munier; and many nieces, nephews, step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren. Mike will miss his beloved canine friends Harry and Bella. He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Helen; brothers, John and James; wife, Anne (2000); and son, Brendan (2016).
Friends may visit the family on Wednesday at Walker Funeral Home, 5155 Sylvania Avenue, (west of Corey Rd.) from 4 -7 p.m. with a prayer service at 7 p.m. The funeral Mass will begin at 10:30 a.m. at St. Pius X Catholic Church, 3011 Carskaddon, Toledo OH 43606. Interment will follow at Calvary. In lieu of flowers, donations to the St. Francis de Sales High School are encouraged. Condolences may be shared with the family at: walkerfuneralhomes.com.
