Blowout City:
Kentucky's press and offense simply crushed LSU's Tigers in Rupp Arena. LSU coach Dale Brown got to watch all but 32 seconds of the second half from the locker room, as the half began with Travis Ford shooting technical free-throws, owing to Brown's harassment of an official at the end of play in the first half. He got a very quick second technical to start the second half, as he complained about a foul not being called against Tiger center Geert Hammink. Brown claimed that this was his first ejection in his career [JNB note - but I am skeptical. Seems like I remember him being bounced from games before this.] Ironically, the Kentucky state trooper who escorted Dale off the floor was also named Dale Brown!
The 105-67 victory was one of Kentucky's biggest ever against LSU. Almost everything Kentucky tried worked to perfection, especially trapping in the press. LSU suffered numerous turnovers, and after they were down by 28 at the half, they appeared to be merely going through the motions during the second half. Jamal Mashburn had a superlative game - no one could handle him. Although he continues to have some trouble at the free throw line, he scored a game-high 27 points. Dent had an usual game in that he had more assists (2) than rebounds (1).
Everybody played for the Cats, even Aminu Timberlake (in both halves!) and Todd Svoboda. Only Chris Harrison failed to score. Freshman Tony Delk had a career high 14 points.
Coach Pitino attributed UK's performance to the loss at Vanderbilt, which he says has been used by the coaching staff as a motivational tool. On his weekly TV show, Pitino said that UK played its offense as well as it could play it, and that the first half was the best he has seen since he has been at Kentucky.
[JNB note - just for fun, I watched the weekly Dale Brown TV show, which appeared right after Pitino's on SportSouth. His main commentary was "What goes around comes around. We're gonna remember this game." They showed about 3 minutes of the game, mostly good LSU shots, then went on to discuss LSU's "big win" over South Carolina. I thought it was amusing that Brown can beat UK by 21 last season, or by 35 points in Rupp Arena a few years ago, and think nothing of it. Yet let UK beat LSU by 38, and all of a sudden, this is a blood feud. Logical, as always...]
Despite Brown's sour grapes, he did say something fairly remarkable. His club lost to Duke 96-67 in December in Hawaii. Having played both Duke and UK, he said "There's no comparison of Duke to Kentucky. I think Kentucky will run all over Duke."
Kentucky has suspended the experiment to convert freshman Tony Delk into a point guard. Although Pitino has indicated that Delk may still receive some playing time at the point, he will no longer be extensively trained for that position.
UK leads the all-time series against LSU by 63-20. In games played in Lexington, the Cats have a 31-4 edge. Pitino is 4-4 against the Tigers, and Brown is 18-28 versus Kentucky.
