Victory Over the Gators:
The Wildcats continued their winning ways by defeating the Florida Gators by a score of 71-48 in Rupp Arena last weekend. The margin should have been even wider, but the officiating was terribly inconsistent and very poor [JNB note - I really hate to gripe about the referees when the win was so big, but I cannot tell a lie. :-)] The order of the day seemed to be to allow total slaughter under the basket, but to call the slightest hand-check foul 30 feet from the basket.
In one play, Roderick Rhodes was fouled by *3* different players with the ref standing a mere 6 feet away, but no call was made (the ball, which was fumbled out of bounds by Rhodes, was given to Kentucky). Rhodes received a punch from a Florida player during a scramble for a rebound, and this appeared to make him mad because he was on fire offensively for the remainder of the game.
Both sides played terrific defense, and both were held under 34% in field goal shooting. This was Florida's lowest point total in their last 27 games, and Kentucky's SEC opponent's lowest point total since a a 50-36 victory over Mississippi State 6 years ago. On the offensive end, Kentucky established a new school record for 3 point shot percentage, completing a dazzling 62.5% of their long range bombs (better than their "regular" field goal percentage which was only 22.7% (10-44). The previous record had been 56.5% (13-23) against Tennessee, earlier this season at Rupp.
UK rebounded better in this contest than in any other game this year, blocking out well, and in particular grabbing many offensive rebounds from the Gators (who were one of the better rebounding teams in the SEC, unlike UK). A total of 26 UK points came from offensively rebounded shots.
Kentucky surprised the Florida by opening in a 2-3 zone, and did very little pressing all night. Pitino, in his weekly TV show, said that the Cats were showing signs of lethargy in practice all week, so he thought that playing a different defense might provide some variety to spark their interest. Although the team practiced the zone all week, they were not told that it would actually be played until after the national anthem was sung. The Wildcats responded with one of their best defensive efforts of the season.
Prospective recruit Anthony Epps attended the Florida game as part of an unofficial visit to the UK campus. Epps has already met NCAA freshman eligibility requirements, and could afford to pay his way to UK (he has already won a $500 academic scholarship at the King of the Bluegrass Tournament earlier this year). Jamal Mashburn's mother was in attendence for this game as well, and it marked the first time she had seen her son play at Rupp Arena.
Kentucky has now won 13 games in a row at Rupp, since its loss last season to Arkansas. UK leads the Florida series 61-19, and has a 32-5 advantage in games played in Lexington. Pitino is 6-1 against Florida, Lon Kruger is 1-4 against the Cats.
