Kentucky Defeats Mississippi Aggies, 31 to 26, in First Round of Tourney
MAKE SPURT TOWARD END
ATLANTA -- Turning loose a determined spurt in the closing minutes of the game, Kentucky defeated Mississippi's Aggies, 31 to 26, in one of the fastest and most spirited games thus far in the Southern Conference tournament here today. Kentucky's passing attack netted much better results than the long shot offensive of the A. and M. five, although the Mississippians found the baskets for numerous long shots. The count at the end of the first period was tied at 13 to 13, with both outfits practically on even terms as to floor work.
A quartet of blue-clad youths led the Kentucky offense and five 'Cats led by the always dependable Carey kept the Aggies shooting from afar. Underwood, Milward, McFarland and Alberts scored all but one of the Blue Grass outfit's points with honors practically even among them. Alberts, although forced out on fouls late in the second half played an excellent floor game besides counting six points. Underwood was high point man of the contest with nine, while Milward, with eight, and McFarland with seven, trailed close behind. Laird and Stone, Aggie guards, were the Mississippi luminaries.
The contest was always close until, late in the second half with Mississippi leading, 21 to 20, Kentucky started their relentless drive down the floor and soon were leading 28 to 21. A field goal by Bryant from midfloor and a foul by an Aggie, coupled with another field goal brought the Aggie count to 26. Meanwhile Kentucky had counted three more markers and led by a comparatively safe margin as the game ended.
Kentucky meets Georgia tomorrow night in the second round. The Athens outfit did not play today as Clemson, their opponent, withdrew yesterday. Georgia defeated the 'Cats 28 to 24 while Applegran's lads were on their southern trip and the Blue and White will be out for revenge.
