Obituary - James R. McFarland dies; played at UK in '20s, Lexington Herald-Leader (June 9, 1987)
McFarland, who attended Lexington High School, now known as Henry Clay High School, was a member of the Blue Devils basketball team that won the national high school championship in 1922.
From there he went to the University of Kentucky and played basketball for the freshman squad his first year and the varsity squad the remaining three years. Also during the 1920s, he was the Lexington singles tennis champ for several years and a doubles champ, teaming with O.G. Steele.
He worked for 42 years with New York Bell Telephone Co. on Long Island before retiring.
He is survived by a son, James Rowland McFarland Jr. of New York City, two daughters, Amalie McFarland of Allentown, Pa., and Mrs. William C. VanInwegen of Lexington.
