Revenge of the Blue Devils:

2nd ranked Duke defeated 3rd ranked Kentucky 71-60 in the Meadowlands during the Jimmy V Classic. The game was televised by ESPN.

The Cats started off well enough, even taking a 6 pt lead early (at 8-2), but once the Blue Devils settled in, they had no difficulty matching Kentucky. A great deal of very physical contact was permitted by the referees in the opening half. Once Magette hit a 3 just after the 1st TV timeout, Duke led 12-10 and they would not trail again. A James layup made it 16-10, and although a pair of Padgett FTs would later cut the margin to 17-15, Duke surged out to a 23-16 edge following a Langdon layup. A few minutes later, scoring by Brand produced 10 pt leads at 27-17 and 29-19. The Cats staged a small rally, with a Bradley layup and dunk cutting the edge to 33-28, and the 2 teams traded baskets for the remainder of the half, and the halftime score stood at 39-34. Brand had 14 1st half pts, with Duke shooting 52% from the floor (after a cool start) and the Wildcats shooting only 43%. Padgett picked up 3 1st half fouls, and did not start the 2nd half.

Duke blew UK away early in the 2nd half, taking a 50-34 lead on the strength of Burgess FTs, a Langdon 10 footer, Avery FTs, a Carrawell 3, and an Avery layup. Maggette fouled out early, but the Blue Devils didn't need him. A pair of Padgett FTs narrowed the gap to 50-40, but Duke again surged to a 12 pt edge at 54-42 after a surprisingly undefended Langdon layup. Turner drove for a layup to cut the score to 56-48. Duke pushed the lead to 60-48 after the Cats appeared highly tentative and unwilling to take open shots. An Evans 3 with 5.5 minutes remaining cut it to 62-53, but each time Duke aggressively challenged UK and an old-fashioned 3 by Brand made the score 67-53 and this sealed the Cats' fate. UK could narrow the gap to no less than 9 (after a Padgett putback of a Turner miss to make it 67-58, and a Padgett dunk to make the score 69-60 with 20 seconds left). James had a final dunk and the game ended with a 71-60 victory on the part of the Blue Devils.

The 60 pts scored by Kentucky was their fewest since losing 59-57 to Florida on Jan 18, 1994. It's 34.9% FG shooting was the lowest of the season. Duke's 8 blocks was a season high for a Kentucky opponent.
