Kentucky Puts the Dogs to Sleep:

They didn't quite reach 100 points, but 5th ranked Kentucky managed to put the unranked Dogs away in the Georgia Coliseum by a 97-74 score. Six Wildcats scored in double figures (versus 2 Georgians) as Kentucky cruised to an easier-than-expected win. Coupled with the win by Auburn over Mississippi State that same night, this win gave UK its 1st recognized SEC regular season championship since 1985-86, and the Cats' 37th regular season title overall.

Georgia started the scoring at 2-0, but UK quickly went up 4-2 before the score was tied at 4-4 and 6-6. Then the Dogs encountered a shooting slump which saw them make only 2-14 from the floor. Georgia went for 7:34 in the 1st half without a FG, and 5:57 without a point being scored. During one particularly ugly period with the score 11-6 in UK's favor, the following sequence took place: Claxton miss, Prickett foul on the rebound, Claxton miss, Story miss, McCarty 3 pt miss, Walker foul, Strong airball, McCarty turnover, Strong turnover, Walker turnover, Anderson layup miss, McCarty miss, Robinson travel, McCarty airball, Georgia team turnover, Strong foul, Pope 3 pt miss, before finally Rhodes broke the slump by hitting 2 FTs.

After UK went up 22-10, Georgia staged a mini-rally (outscoring the Cats 8-2, to close to 24-18). But the Wildcats exploded at that point, outscoring the Dogs 16-4 to go up 40-22. The margin was 40-26 at halftime. Georgia students appeared to throw items onto the floor on several occasions, and had to be warned (involuntarily, from the tone of it) by Coach Durham once to refrain to avoid injuries and a technical foul. The crowd also chanted "Shep-pard, Shep-pard" to try to rattle the Peachtree City native (who once lived in Athens), but Jeff played a solid game, and soon it was the UK fans who were cheering him on with their own cries of "Shep-pard, Shep-pard."

Durham's Dogs cut the Kentucky lead to 11 (at 52-41) with 11:38 remaining in the contest, but a 24-10 Cat attack put the Dogs to sleep. The only remaining question was whether Kentucky would be able to score 100 points in Athens, but the Cats seemed content with a large final margin and did not exert themselves to reach triple digits.
