Number 6 ranked Kentucky edged Vanderbilt 71-60 in Nashville, led by Tony Delk's 22 points. Ronnie McMahan led the 'Dores with 17 points, 11 in the 1st half. UK was ranked 6th by the AP, and Vanderbilt was unranked when this game took place.
Vanderbilt took an early 18-8 lead in the games' 1st 10 minutes, and led by 10 for several minutes in the 1st half. UK tied the game at 22-22, but fell behind again shortly after. Vandy hit on 54.5% of their FGs in the 1st period, and 66.7% of their 3s. UK managed only 35.7% of their FGs, and only 10.0% of their 3s. The 'Dores led 29-24 at the half.
The Commodores scored the 1st basket of the 2nd half to go up 31-24, but then Kentucky made an 18-5 run to lead 42-36. During this time, Tony Delk hit a basket with 16:13 left in the game to give Kentucky the lead for good at 38-36.
UK used a 13-1 run in the final 4 minutes of the game to win. Vanderbilt's Malik Evans hit 2 FTs with 3:54 left in the game to cut the Wildcat margin to 58-56, but Rodrick Rhodes began UK's final run with a pair of FTs. The Cats defense held Vandy to 37.9% FG shooting and 30.0% 3 point shooting in the 2nd half. [JNB note - sorry, but the Atlanta Fox affiliate decided to show Alabama-Florida, and my regular UK sports bar couldn't find the UK game (despite checking several satellites several times and calling several organizations for coordinates. So this is all the info I could scrape together on the play-by-play of the game.]
