Defense reigns as Cats beat Georgia
The Kentucky basketball team has a patent on grind-it-out, down-to-the-wire affairs even if it is giving their coach and faithful fans heart failure in the process.
The Cats nearly squandered a 20-4 lead at the outset of the game before shutting the door on a pesky Georgia team down the stretch for a 61-55 victory that looked remarkably similar to their five-point win in Athens 17 days earlier. The win continued to give UK (14-10, 8-3 SEC) hope in its quest for a NCAA Tournament bid.
It looked like anything but a nail biter when the Cats jumped out to a 16-point lead in the first seven minutes behind 11 points from Joe Crawford, but Georgia fought back to within three late in the first half and trailed by just seven at the break. A 10-3 run midway through the second half extended UK's lead to 52-41 and seemed to bury the Bulldogs but again the comfortable lead was short-lived as Georgia pulled within 55-52 on a Sundiata Gaines three-pointer with 6:27 remaining.
It was the last points Georgia would score until just 12.1 seconds remained as UK clamped down on defense and forced the Bulldogs to miss eight straight shots over that stretch. Despite struggling to score itself, UK made four free throws in the final 19.8 seconds to seal the win.
Crawford led UK with 23 points while Patrick Patterson added 20 points and nine rebounds and Bradley made up for a poor shooting night with 12 rebounds.
