Smashed Utes:

Another seemingly effortless game by Kentucky enabled the Cats to breeze into the Sweet Sixteen as they defeated Utah 83-62 in Nashville.

Utah scored the game's first basket, but missed their next 8 shots. Kentucky led by 17 points with 9 minutes left in the opening half. The Utes didn't reach double figures in scoring until 5:38 remained in the first half.

With a 19 point halftime lead, Kentucky again set itself on cruise control and ended up winning by "only" 21. Coach Pitino said "we cannot play any better at both ends of the court than we're playing right now." Mashburn added "we're just peaking at the right time. We feel good about where we're at. We're young, we're healthy and we're a little crazy." Rick Majerus reminded fans that "I remember being at Ball State and being real impressed with a high school player in the area named Aminu Timberlake. I mean, he doesn't even get off their bench now."

The Cats held Utah, supposedly a very good shooting team, to 31% FG shooting in the first half. So complete was the Cat's mastery of the Utes that UK didn't foul very much. Utah, the nation's most accurate FT shooting team, attempted only 1 FT in the first half. Only 3 Utes scored in the first half, with the two-time WAC MVP Josh Grant scoring 9. Three point specialist Phil Dixon did not score during the game. Jimmy Soto, the team's second leading scorer, managed a single FG, with 4:19 left in the game.

Since the SEC tournament, Kentucky has been winning its contests by an average of 30.8 points per game.
