Dream Game #12:

11 times in the "modern" era (ie post 1958) Kentucky and Louisville have played, with UK the winner 7 times. Last Saturday night in Freedom Hall, Kentucky added to its winning streak by taking the 12th such contest, defeating the Cardinals 88-68. The overall series results since the resumption of play in the 1983 "Dream Game" are shown below, along with the final season record of each team.

As you can see from the above table, the Wildcats typically win during years where they are clearly superior, or are about even with Louisville (as determined by both school's final record, anyway). The Cardinals traditionally win when they are clearly superior.

Louisville led early, but the Wildcats never panicked as they slowly crept back. Kentucky's press didn't seem to bother the Cards early as they sliced through it whenever they wanted, but as the game wore on and they became more flustered, it did. Gimel Martinez played for significantly longer stretches in this game as UK coach Rick Pitino appeared to prefer experience to raw talent, but Gimel didn't look very good. Although he managed to get 14 points, he had numerous defensive lapses (either not getting back or fouling excessively), he had many turnovers, and he botched numerous passes.

When U of L had managed a 10 point lead, Clifford Rozier blocked a Roderick Rhodes shot, and afterwards pointed to Rhodes (who had been knocked to the floor) and taunted him, thereby earning a technical foul. U of L led by 10 at that point, but from then on it was almost all Kentucky. With about 7 minutes left in the first half, Louisville became very impatient on offense, which allowed UK to make a run which enabled it to lead 48-40 at the half, after outscoring the Cardinals 30-14 to end the half.

Jamal Mashburn was absolutely stellar in the first half, hitting many threes and proving to be generally unstoppable. UK managed to connect on 7 3-pointers by halftime. Jamal tied his career high of 5 3-pointers in the game. U of L didn't help its own cause at the free throw line (UK wasn't much better early, but improved later in the game), shooting just 44%.

The second half was much like the end of the first half, with Louisville rushing their shots, showing impatience, and a general lack of discipline on offense. Roderick Rhodes appeared fired up, and had a sensational game again. UK built a lead of 27 points, which they allowed U of L to whittle down to 20 by the end of the game. If Kentucky had kept the pressure on, they might've eclipsed their earlier record margin of 34 points in the win, but Pitino apparently had no desire to bury Louisville.
