Avenged:

Kentucky beat a scrappy Georgia Tech team 96-87 last Saturday in Rupp Arena, in a game nationally televised by ESPN. UK led the entire game but could never build an overwhelming lead against the 13th ranked Yellow Jackets. Several times the margin ballooned to 15 points, but Tech cut the lead to 5 on a couple of occasions, only to commit a foul, turn the ball over, or take a bad shot which enabled the Wildcats to move back out in front comfortably.

Freshmen sensation Roderick Rhodes had 27 points, coming both from outside shots and quick inside moves. Pitino had to tell Rhodes at one point "you'll be here for 4 years, you don't have to break Dan Issel's scoring record here at Kentucky in your freshman year!" since Roderick was shooting so rapidly.

Rhodes was joined by Jamal Mashburn who also had 27 points. Jamal was hampered by foul trouble for much of the game, and it seemed as if the refs were letting them play under the basket, but calling it tightly (perhaps too tightly) in the open court. Mashburn appeared frustrated at times, but he continued to play hard. He had to change jerseys in the second half due to blood stains, although Travis Ford had some blood on his uniform and wasn't required to change.

Ford had a relatively good game - although he and Dale Brown allowed Travis Best to score 27 points (basically, sophomores James Forrest and Best *were* the Georgia Tech offense) but Best also had only 3 assists and had 7 turnovers. Ford managed only 6 points, but he had 4 assists and only 2 turnovers. Late in the game, Ford appeared to be hit in the nose by a Best elbow, but he did not retaliate, which drew praise from Pitino after the game.

Dent had a pretty good game, pulling down 11 rebounds and scoring 10 points, many on thunderous dunks. UK managed to outrebound the taller Tech team, due largely to Dent's efforts.

Dale Brown rolled out of bounds towards the end of the game and ran hard into a cameraman. He appeared to have either broken or severely bruised ribs - Pitino in his Sunday TV show didn't know which, but said the treatment for both is the same. Neither Tony Delk or Chris Harrison played in the game - no reason was given.

Riddick had a reasonably good game, blocking several shots and making a few baskets. He was loudly cheered when he managed to make two out of his three free throws!

The foul calls seemed somewhat inconsistent in this game. Play was pretty free under the basket, but some of the numerous calls made in the open court bordered on the ridiculous. Foul shooting was what kept Tech in the game - they made 22-35 to Kentucky's 15-21 (and most of Kentucky's came late in the game, when the issue had already been decided). The win was Pitino's 200th in his career (200-101) and his 67th at Kentucky (67-27).
