Vanderbilt Falls In Wildcats' Drive to Southern Title; Score is 30 to 20
Off Winging, Kentucky Is Never Headed; Win No. 13
All's well that ends well, so the old, old story goes.
Kentucky, remembering successive stings received at the hands of Vanderbilt University on the gridiron, turned on these Commodores last night at the university gymnasium and increased their string of consecutive victories to 13 and their string of wins in the Southern Conference to eight, thus retaining their 1,000 per cent standing in the Conference. The final score was 30 to 20 -- fair enough.
As usual, Kentucky scored first and took a long lead which was too much for Vanderbilt to overcome. Old Mike Carey, the faithful, made one of his usual two points by making a free throw good and McFarland, after juggling the ball over the heads of the entire Commodore team, tipped one in for a field goal. Mohney flashed his old time form to sink two lightning crip shots to make the score 7 to 0. Stuart scored first for the visitors with a foul shot but Moss, a Winchester, Ky., boy, arched one into the net from the middle of the floor. Mohney then made a crip good from an extremely difficult angle. Stuart scored a field goal but Carey came back with the second of his two points and sent Kentucky's stock soaring, 13 to 6. Gayle, otherwise Mohney, made a shot form the foul line good. Sharpe caromed a free throw into the basket and Mohney ended the scoring in the half by flipping a field goal.
Vandy Tries Long Ones
Vanderbilt was the first to score in the second half, but Besuden, substituting for Underwood, added two points via a field goal. Jenkins shot two free throws and Alberts followed this up with a crip shot. Stuart, Moss and Brooks tried three long shots successfully and brought the score to 23 to 14, the narrowest margin that separated the two teams during the entire game. Besuden soon regained a 10 point lead for the Wildcats by caging two crip shots in succession, the last one being made while he was on a dribbling run. Stuart added two points to Vandy's total but good little Mohney covered one of his points with a foul. Bridges came through with three points but Mohney again scored a field goal, the last one for Kentucky. Moss' successful foul try was the final tally of the game.
Kentucky Was Right !
Kentucky was right. They took no chances as they did against Tennessee. They passed the ball rapidly among themselves when necessary and at times seemed to be putting on an exhibition of deceptive passing right in the midst of the Vandy players.
Vanderbilt displayed enough ability to make trouble for any other team but Kentucky , as the latter played last night. With Moss and Stuart making their share of long shots and the former together with Keene, getting the ball off the backboard with regularity, the Commodores appeared dangerous at times. However, having to resort to long shots, they did not follow them up which proved fatal. Carey sending the oval zipping down the floor time after time after a Commodore had missed an attempted long heave.
Freak Shot is Made
A freak shot went against Kentucky early in the second half when Stuart caged a field goal, Carey was forced to jump with the lanky center but on the toss-up, Stuart hit the ball and it fell through the mesh without a bobble. This "accident" was the first of its kind to happen on the local court this season, and possibly for many seasons. It brought a generous round of applause from the audience.
Carey and Stuart were participants in a blocking match in which each was guilty of the same thing and given a foul. Regretfully, Stuart made his shot good while Carey's failed, although it tried hard enough to find the opening.
Last Game for Four Men
The game was the last before a home crowd for Jimmie McFarland, Lovell Underwood, Chuck Alberts and Foster Helm. Each saw action, although Helm failed to register a point.
Mohney was again high scorer with 13,, while Besuden and Jenkins got six and five respectively. Kentucky edged Vandy out on foul shooting, getting eight out of 14, while the visitors shot six out of an even dozen.
Johnny Head and his green shirt did some dandy refereeing.
So, all's well that ends well, the old, old story goes. It was a creditable crowd, a glorious victory and a most happy ending for the most successful basketball season for Kentucky since 1921.
