CATS RUN WILD AT CENTRE'S EXPENSE
State University Basketball Five Wallops Danville Team, 38 to 5
DANVILLE, Ky., Feb. 15 -- Masters of the position at all times, their goal reached only twice from the field and once from a foul, State University's basketball team overwhelmed the Centre College five here tonight by a score of 38 to 5.
No particular star was developed among the Wildcats, the whole team playing together and each member of the team scoring three or more goals except George Zerfoss, who played under instructions to keep the State goal guarded at all times and let his older teammates do the scoring. Turley made all of the local's five points. He threw two field goals and one foul in six attempts. Hart threw five goals and two fouls out of three attempts.
Game Writeup - Kentucky Advocate (February 16, 1916)
K.S.U. TEAM SWAMPS LOCAL QUINTET 38 TO 5
The game between Kentucky State and Centre last night upset the dope again. According to the games the two teams had formerly played with the University of Louisville, the match last night was due to have been a close one but such was not the case.
The first half was interesting and closer than the score would indicate, and at the end of the period the score was 15 to 3.
The visitors started out with the punch that slowly told the tale. Somehow or other quite a defense was always present at Centre's goal and the home team lost much ground by passing toward their opponent's goal.
Captain Turley played his usual good game, and he alone had his usual presence on the floor. The score looks bad and it is hard to lose the first game with State, but if the crowd sticks with Littick he will produce the stuff. Remember the words, "A long pull, a hard pull."
Game Preview - Danville Messenger (February 15, 1916)
AT THE COLLEGES by Paul J. Hughes
Tonight is the night. For the first time in six years Centre College is to meet her old rival - Kentucky State College - in an athletic contest. The differences that have kept them apart have been patched up and at this time there is a very cordial relation between the two student bodies; yet there still exists the most intense rivalry, which will be given a chance to show itself tonight when Tigert's quintet comes over from Lexington to meet the White and Gold team in the new Boyle-Humphrey gymnasium.
The two teams are almost evenly matched. Vanderbilt has vanquished the State team twice by big scores; Louisville has beaten them by a close margin on their own floor in Lexington, and, although somewhat battered up by these frays, they are in good trim for the contest tonight.
The Centre team has just last week beaten Georgetown and Kentucky Wesleyan. They have lost a hard game by 7 points to Louisville. But they have never this season been more in shape for this big game. Coach Littick and Capt. Turley have been working incessantly for the past two weeks covering up their weak points and substituting good ones for them. All in all, this will undoubtedly prove the most exciting game played in Danville in years. The home team will have a chance to use their big new gym to advantage and with it the dope is theirs.
King, of Transylvania, will referee. The game will begin promptly at 8:30 tonight. Every citizen and student will be expected to be on hand with their whole-hearted support, as they have always been, and do their utmost to cheer the Centre team on to victory.
The team line-up will be as follows:
Centre College - Turley, Capt., F.; Puryear, F.; Tate, C.; Montgomery, G.; Diddle, G.
Kentucky State - Zerfoss, Capt., F.; Hart, F.; Server, C.; Gumbert, G.; Ireland, G.
