Obituary - Knoxville (TN) News-Sentinel (September 18, 1990)
Longtime Referee, Herman Ramsey, Dies
After a lengthy bout with cancer, longtime Blount County referee and official Herman Lee Ramsey died Saturday afternoon. He was 47.
Ramsey, a Rockford resident, was a highly respected basketball official in the Southeastern Conference, Ohio Valley Conference and Metro Conference.
During his illness, Ramsey received hundreds of get well cards, including some from Alabama basketball coach Wimp Sanderson and Georgia's Hugh Durham.
Besides basketball, Ramsey was also a referee at area small college and high school football games.
Ramsey, who was a physical education teacher at Whittle Springs Junior High in Knoxville, graduated from Everett High School and Maryville College.
It was during his stay at Maryville College that Ramsey got his start in umpiring and refereeing.
Ramsey, an avid golfer, was also a guiding influence in organizing and running the annual Blount County Golf Tournament.
Never one to shy away from an active lifestyle, Ramsey also spent most of his summer nights helping umpire area slow-pitch softball. He was a longtime umpire at the annual Smoky Mountain Classic softball tournament.
He was a member of Broadway Baptist Church.
Survivors include: daughters, Jill R. Ramsey and Kristi Ramsey, both of Maryville; brothers, Marvin Ramsey, Crossville and Wilburn Ramsey, Mobile, Ala.; mother, Willie B. Ramsey of Maryville; and five nieces.
The funeral was held Monday night at McCammon-Ammons Funeral Home Chapel. Interment is 10 a.m. today at Sherwood Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Chris Burns officiating.
The family suggests memorials be made to Maryville College for the Herman L. Ramsey Memorial Scholarship fund.
