Dave Reese is the only Denison athlete to earn 12 letters in four sports.
As a football center, Dr. Reese scored six touchdowns in three years, made the football and basketball All-Ohio teams twice each, and played on three basketball and one football squad which won state championships. Centers were eligible pass receivers when he played football.
He lettered in football, basketball, baseball and tennis, and captained the 1914 Denison grid team which won the Ohio Conference championship. Reese caught the first forward pass from George Roudebush in 1912. In basketball, he earned first-team All-Ohio and All-Ohio Conference honors as a senior.
Reese, born near Massillon, was president of his freshman class and won the school tennis championship the following year. He received the bachelor of philosophy degree in 1915 and then played seven years of professional football and basketball.
Dave played four seasons with the Dayton Triangles in both the APFA (1920-21) and the NFL (1922-23). He played in 17 games during his two-year APFA stint and 16 games in two seasons in the NFL.
Reese was the first commissioner of the Mid-American Conference and served in that post for 18 years, retiring in 1964. He earned the D.D.S. and O.C.D.S. degrees from the University of Cincinnati.
An active supporter of Denison, Reese was president of the college Society of the Alumni in 1949-50 and headed the society's Dayton chapter in 1924-25. He was chairman of the original committee to raise funds for the Denison field house. Denison awarded him an Alumni Citation in 1954.
He was known for years as one of the country's best football and basketball officials. While officiating the 1944 Notre Dame-Army game, Reese was run over by ArmyÕs famed fullback "Doc" Blanchard. He suffered a broken leg and arm in the collision. He boasted at the time that he "stopped Blanchard which was more than the whole Notre Dame team could do." Army defeated Notre Dame 58-0 in that game.
