Obituary - Cincinnati Enquirer (September 22, 1973)
Charles R. (Heck) Harrington, 76, former outstanding Cincinnati athlete and veteran football and basketball official, died Friday at his home, 1117 Olivia Ln., Price Hill.
In his early years, Mr. Harrington played football and basketball with prominent Cincinnati area teams, including the Christ Church aggregation, of which he was captain when it won the national amateur baseball championship in 1919. He boxed as an amateur and professional.
He was president of the Ohio Valley Officials Association in 1939 and at one time was athletic director of the Fenwick Club.
During World War I Mr. Harrington was a telegrapher in the Navy's submarine service. He was in the real estate management business for the former Benjamin Strader Co. for about 40 years. He retired 15 years ago.
Mr. Harrington was an official at the original Western Hills-Elder football series when it was played at Redland Field. For years he officiated at the traditional Thanksgiving Day games between University of Cincinnati and Miami University. He also officiated in the old National Football League.
Shortly after he retired from officiating after World War II, he was called out of the stands at a Notre Dame-Army game to take the place of official Dr. David Reese, who was injured during the game.
Mr. Harrington leaves his wife, Annette; one son, Charles Harrington, Mt. Lookout; one daughter, Mrs. Jane Sutton, Darien, Conn.; two sisters, Mrs. Stella Rinehart, Cincinnati, and Mrs. Alice Lotter, Columbus Grove, Ohio; 11 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Funeral Mass will be in the St. Teresa Church, Price Hill, at 9:30 a.m. Monday. Visitation is from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Charles A. Miller Sons Funeral Home, 4238 Hamilton Ave., Northside. He will be buried in the St. Joseph Cemetery, Eighth St. and Seton Ave.
