Cats Come From Behind to Beat Tigers
Georgetown Catches Kentucky Off Form, But Loses, 25 to 20
It might be all right to stroke a cat on the back, but don't pull his tail, scratch him or spit at him.
Kentucky's Wildcats allowed themselves to be toyed with in the first half of their game with Georgetown last night at the gymnasium and the Tigers went too far, having a 13 to 6 lead at midway.
In the second period the Wildcats called upon some of their basketball knowledge and with the viciousness only they can display, wrested the lead within five minutes, coasting the remainder of the time to a 25 to 20 victory.
Ray Eklund's charges were plainly suffering from a week of exhausting examinations. Their minds were far from basketball in the opening half and the Tigers led by Captain Bradbury and Collier, whose floorwork bordered on lightning, played rings around the Wildcats.
When the second half opened, the Blue quintet with Gayle Mohney and Paul Jenkins doing the most effective work uncorked some of the speed that won a narrow verdict for them over Georgia Tech a week previous. In five minutes the Wildcats hit the hoops for five field goals and a foul. At this juncture they changed to a waiting game, penetrating Georgetown territory only when an opportunity presented itself.
Mohney and Jenkins were the only Wildcats who played to their true form and they saved the night for Kentucky. Mohney substituted for Besuden and was high point man with five neat baskets and a foul shot out of a single try, keeping his percentage at 1.000 for the past three games. All of Mohney's goals were made under the hoop and despite the alert backguarding of Barnes. Jenkins' dribbling was pretty to watch and on several occasions he caged pretty baskets from past the foul circle.
Harrington, former University of Cincinnati star, refereed the game and did a good job of it. He kept the game going as fast as he could and saw more than just the play in the immediate vicinity of the ball's whereabouts.
In a preliminary game, the Kittens disposed of the Hazard High school quintet, 26 to 19, after the visitors led at the end of the half, 13 to 9. Knadler made 14 points for the Kittens and played on outstanding game. Gilb's guarding was an important factor in Kentucky's win. Brashear uncorked some good dribbling while Balser thrilled the crowd with several neat back-hand shots.
