Graveside services for Mr. Walter E. Hovater, 79, McIntosh, coach of the only Orlando high school team ever to win a state basketball championship, will be held at 10 a.m. today at Daytona Beach.
He died Friday at his home.
Mr. Hovater coached basketball and football at Orlando Senior High School 1935-43. His football teams also were rated at the top of the former Big 10 High School Conference.

After his graduation, he was athletic coach at Georgetown College and served in the U.S. Navy in World War I.
Mr. Hovater came to Orlando as football and basketball coach and geography teacher at Orlando Senior High. He finally left the coaching field to devote his time to his real estate holdings in Orlando and Daytona Beach and to his horse breeding and racing interest.
He moved to Lexington, Ky., where he owned a farm and bred thoroughbred horses and pink Sheland ponies. Later he moved to McIntosh, where he continued to raise horses.
He was a member of McIntosh Methodist Church.
