Obituary - Death Takes Burgess Carey, Lexington Herald (December 3, 1961)
Death came at 3:50 a.m. at Central Baptist Hospital for Carey, a partner in the Carey Construction Co. and H.C. Adams Contractors. He had been ill six weeks.
Carey, playing as guard, was named All-America in 1925. This made him the second Wildcat to be so honored, Basil Hayden, a forward, having been named in 1921.
Carey also served as captain of the UK team and played basketball at the school from 1923 to 1926.
Previously he had served as captain of the old Lexington Senior High School team, the school's first team to win a national basketball championship. He graduated from Lexington Senior in 1922.
Carey was a native of Lexington, a son of the late George B. and Katherine Reed Carey.
In addition to his business interests here, he was president and chairman of the board of the Southern Amiesite Asphalt Co. of Birmingham, Ala., and was a past director of the Kentucky Plant Mix Asphalt Association.
At the time of his death he was chairman of the board of Idle Hour Country Club.
He was a member of the Second Presbyterian Church, the Lexington Country Club, the Lexington Club, the UK Alumni Century Club and the Sigma Chi social fraternity.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Charlotte Gilboy Carey; a daughter, Mrs. Robert A. Mason, Lexington; a son, George B. Carey III, Lexington, and two grandchildren, Horatio Pleasants Mason and Charlotte Carey Mason, Lexington.
Services will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the W.R. Milward Mortuary - Broadway by the Rev. James W. Angell. Burial will be in the Lexington Cemetery.
Bearers will be Hampton C. Adams, John Wesley Marr, W. Emmet Milward, Alfred G. Powell, John T. Shouse, Edward W. Jouett, F.H. Wright and former Gov. A.B. Chandler.
Honorary bearers will be Dr. Rankin C. Blount, William E. Lehman, Thomas F. Hobart, William H. Courtney, C.A. Coleman, John M. Reed, Jouett Reed, J. Stephen Watkins, Frank E. Zorniger, Harry St. George Tucker, James H. Alexander, James L. Wilder and George Swinebroad.
Friends may call at the mortuary after 1 o'clock this afternoon.
