Hoosiers beat Cats
Poor shooting and turnovers continued to plague the young Wildcats as IU wins 83-75.
Kentucky continued their slide as the Indiana Hoosiers beat the Wildcats 83-75. Until Saturday, Kentucky had beaten Indiana five consecutive times. It was Kentucky's third straight loss. Kentucky has not lost three in a row since 1990.
Kentucky's turnovers and poor shooting continued to plague them, going a mere 22-55 from the floor for 40% FG shooting. They turned the ball over 18 times. From 3-point land the Cats were even colder, shooting 26% from outside the arc. Indiana, on the other hand, shot well from the field, led by seniors A.J. Guyton, who led all scorers with 21 points, and Michael Lewis, who scored 17 and iced the Cats with 10-11 from the FT line.
Indiana and Kentucky played close, exchanging the lead early in the first half.Ê But the Hoosiers went on an 18-4 run, from which Kentucky never recovered. Indiana shot 61% from the field in the first half to extend their lead to 45-33 by haltime.Ê Kentucky would get no closer than 7.
Tayshaun Prince led the Wildcats with 17 points and Saul Smith added 13, though he only shot 4-13 from the field (1-6 from three point land). Kentucky outrebounded Indiana 36-24, including 14 offensive rebounds. But Kentucky could not get the shots to fall, often missing 2nd and 3rd chances at the basket.
For the third straight game, it was the opponent's guard play that killed Kentucky. In this case, Guyton, Lewis, Fife and Jimenez combined for 6-11 shooting from behind the arc, had 6 steals, and 12 assists. Indiana's experienced guard play handled Kentucky's press easily. Indiana's bench played well as their reserve big men hung in there with the big Wildcats front line while Haston rode the pine with foul trouble.
Kentucky's next game is Tuesday against UNC-Asheville.
IU's Kirk Haston gets off a hook shot while defended by Todd Tackett (#12) and Marvin Stone (#24)
Tayshaun Prince (#21) defends a shot by Dane Fife
IU's Larry Richardson (#33) tries to take the ball away from Jules Camara (#40)
