Cats win 61-58
The Kentucky Wildcats built a 13 point haltime lead, then hung on for dear life, as the Maryland Terrapins staged a comeback that fell just short. Kentucky escaped with a 61-58 win. Tayshaun Prince led the way with 21 points and 9 rebounds. Freshman Keith Bogans, who has struggled his first two games, chipped in with 17 points. Fellow freshman Marvin Stone added a game high 13 rebounds and 2 blocked shots.
Kentucky broke out to an early first half lead and looked ready to blow the Terps out of the gym as they built their lead to as many as 16 points. But in the second half the Wildcats went ice cold from the field and from the free throw line, allowing the Terrapins to climb back into the game, knotting the contest at 52-52 with 6:30 to play. The boxscore can be found here.
But Kentucky hung on for the win, barely. For the game, the Cats shot a mere 35.6% from the field (27.8% from three point range) and 55.6% from the free throw line, numbers which undoubtedly has Lute Olsen and the Arizona Wildcats smiling.
Kentucky will face Arizona on Friday for the NIT title. Arizona has beaten Kentucky in their last two meetings, including the 1997 NCAA Championship game in overtime. Arizona beat Notre Dame easily earlier in the evening.
Terrance Morris led the Terrapin come back, finishing with 25 points and 8 rebounds. Juan Dixon, who had played so well early on, had a horrible shooting night, going just 3-17 from the field (0-6 from 3-point range).
Bogans looked extremely good in the first half, hitting shots and handling the ball. He scored 12 points. Toward the beginning of the second half, however, he tended to play a little out of control, finishing the game with four turnovers. Jamaal Magloire was unable to get into the flow of the game offensively. He was cut off for much of the game and forced several shots, finishing just 2-9 from the field and 2-7 from the free throw line. Jam was also denied a single blocked shot. Magloire and Stone face a stiff challenge Friday against Arizona's Loren Woods, who had 13 points and 10 rebounds in Arizona's win over Notre Dame.
Jules Camara (#40) is fouled by Maryland's Steve Blake
