Ultimate Defense (or Winning It Twice):

Kentucky had basically won the game in regulation, but the Cats coasted too early, allowing Indiana to tie the game in regulation, and #5 ranked UK was forced to play an overtime session before defeating the #11 ranked Hoosiers 70-61 in Freedom Hall. This was the 1st OT session of the season for both teams. This was Coach Knight's 1000th game played as a head coach. The contest was televised by ESPN.

UK got the opening tap, and Turner drove for a tough 8 footer to make it 2-0 Kentucky. Washington answered right back with a 16 footer. Prince had his foot on the 3 pt line for a long 2, then Evans hit a 19 footer. With UK playing tenacious defense, Indiana had a hard time getting a decent shot away, and after several misses, Kentucky got the ball and Bradley made an old-fashioned 3 for a 9-2 lead. Padgett made a stellar clean block, but was called for the foul (by Ed Hightower), and Gladness made 1 FT. Guyton added a layup seconds later to make it 9-5 UK. Evans made a FT for a 10-5 lead, and the score stood there for quite a while as both sides played outstanding defense. Padgett got another clean block against Lewis (surprisingly, this time there was no foul called), and yet another against Haston. Finally Guyton made a FT to end the scoring drought. UK was inefficient on its next possession, missing several opportunities, and Haston finally got the ball and made a layup. But Padgett connected on a 3 to make it 13-8, then he made a tough reverse basket underneath, and Turner got the ball on a breakaway and had a dunk for a 17-8 margin, forcing Bobby Knight to call a timeout. Washington and Recker scored to narrow the lead, and Indiana's Rob Turner made a 15 footer as the shot clock expired to close to within 17-14. But Bradley got off a beautiful assist to Camara for a dunk, and Evans was fouled and connected twice from the FT line, for a 21-14 UK edge. Haston finally hit a hook shot in the final minute to end all scoring for the half, which saw the Wildcats leading the Hoosiers 21-16. A tremendous collision between several players took place in the final seconds of the game, off an IU miss and rebound try, but no fouls were called. The Cats shot a pathetic 26% from the floor in the 1st half, with Indiana connecting on only 28%. The Hoosiers missed all 6 3 pt tries, with the Cats making only 1 of 7. Indiana scored only 1 FG in the game's final 5:22, and UK made only 1 basket in the final 7:45 of the contest. The score represented a halftime low for both schools (Indiana's previous low was 26 pts against Indiana State, and Kentucky had previously scored only 25 in their loss to Pitt in Puerto Rico).

Gladness made a FT to start the 2nd half scoring, but Evans nailed a 3 to make it 24-17. Guyton had a putback basket, then had a backdoor layup, but Bradley answered with FTs for a 26-21 edge. IU closed to 28-26 after a Guyton FG and a Recker 3, but Evans answered with a 3. Recker and Bradley traded shots, then Bradley put back a Padgett miss for a 35-28 edge. Gladness, Guyton, and Recker shots closed it to 35-34 after the next TV timeout. Camara hit 1 FT, then a pair of Guyton FTs tied the score at 36-36. Prince threw the ball away, and Guyton drove for Indiana's 1st lead of the night at 38-36. Padgett tied it on a banked shot, then Fife drove the lane for IU's last lead at 40-38. A pair of later Padgett FTs tied it, then Evans nailed a 3 (during this sequence, Bradley got a rebound but briefly thought he was a guard and tried to dribble it upcourt. Needless to say, he walked). Smith blew past the defense for a wide open dunk, and it was 47-40 with about 3.5 minutes remaining in the game. Haston hit a 10 footer, Turner hit 2 FTs, and Evans made a well-nigh unbelievable reverse dunk for a 51-42 edge with 1:21 remaining. The Cats must have thought they had the win sealed, because they then started to play to burn clock, and Indiana made the most of this. Recker and Guyton hit 3s to close it to 51-48 with about 50 seconds left. Bad ball handling and a poor offense by UK caused the shot clock to drain down to 1 second as the ball was tapped out of bounds. Padgett threw it in, and it may have hit the rim after Bradley touched it, but the officials ruled a shot clock violation. After a UK 20 second timeout, Fife faked Turner out of his shoes and hit a 3 to tie the game 51-51 with 1.7 seconds remaining. UK tried to throw the ball in, but IU got their hands on it and heaved a desperation shot from 3/4 court which came uncomfortably close to going in. The score was 51-51 at the end of regulation. Neither UK nor Indiana had scored on more than 2 consecutive possessions.

Many, including Vitale, may have thought the momentum had swung to Indiana, but the Cats came out firing in the overtime period, going up 59-51 on a Padgett 3, a Turner drive, a Padgett FT, and 2 Evans FTs before IU scored with less than 3.5 minutes remaining. During this UK flurry (with the Cats ahead 56-51), Coach Knight thought that Smith had fouled a driving Haston, and he was livid that the officials had made no call. Because of this, Knight kicked the large Louisville sign in front of the scorer's table, and was called for a technical foul. As he turned to go back to the bench, Knight kicked the table a 2nd time, but no 2nd technical foul followed. Later Padgett made another 2 FTs, and when Smith also made a pair, the Wildcats had a 63-52 lead. If anything, Knight's antics prevented any significant comeback by his team in the OT. Recker made a layup, then Padgett made a pair of FTs. Smith made 1 of 2 when fouled by Guyton, and the Cats briefly held a 66-54 edge (their largest of the night). Odle was fouled and hit 2, then Evans answered with 2 of his own. Fife connected on a 12 footer, but then Evans made a nice pass to Bradley for a dunk and a 70-58 score. Fife hit a 3 with 20 seconds left, and UK merely dribbled out the clock (Indiana didn't foul) for their 70-61 victory. Heshimu Evans' 22 pts tied his career high, and his 3 3 pt shots in the game were a career high. Kentucky missed only 4 of 27 FTs, an amazing rate for them this season.
