Dogs beat Kentucky
Perseverance finally payed off for the Georgia Bulldogs.
After losing two disappointing games in a row to conference powers Alabama and Vanderbilt, they came back one more time to hand Kentucky an 86-81 loss Monday night in the Georgia Coliseum.
The first half was a see-saw battle which saw the Dogs open up a six point, 40-34 lead with 3:20 remaining in the period. Kentucky came back behind the scoring of center Mike Phillips and freshman guard Truman Claytor to catch Georgia and take a 47-44 lead at halftime.
Kentucky dominated the boards in the second half and Georgia came out shooting cold as the Wildcats opened up a 61-52 lead with 13:34 left in the game. The Bulldogs battled back behind the scoring of Jacky Dorsey and Tony Flanagan and tied the score at 64-64 with 12:10 left.
Once again Kentucky got hot from the floor and opened a six point 69-73 (sic) lead with just 7:47 remaining.
From that point sophomore center Lucius Foster began to hit from the outside, scoring six straight points. Dorsey hit two free throws and the score was tied at 79 with 2:56 left in the game.
Georgia took the lead for the first time in the second half, 81-79 on a jumper by Foster, who had ten points in the last seven minutes of the game. He hit another layup and Flanagan added two free throws with one second remaining to provide the final five point spread.
"It's great to win any game, but against Kentucky and their fine tradition, it's tremendous," head coach John Guthrie said. "The game could have gone either way, but we got the breaks at the end."
The win puts Georgia's record at 10-10 with a 5-6 mark in the SEC. Their next game will be this Saturday against Auburn in Auburn.
